What are Scleral Lenses?

Scleral Lenses are large, rigid contact lenses designed to be very comfortable. The lens vaults over cornea (the clear front surface of the eye) and rests on the Sclera (the white part of the eye).  This creates a "new" regular front surface - the result is the clearer, more stable vision that a rigid lens provides without sacrificing comfort.

Uses of Scleral Lenses

Scleral Lenses are perfect for those with high or irregular prescriptions due to:

  • Myopia
  • Hypermetropia
  • Presbyopia
  • Astigmatism
  • Patients that have a regular prescription but an active lifestyle
  • Keratoconus and Corneal Ectasia which cause an irregular corneal shape leading to distorted vision
  • Dry Eye
    • Scleral Lenses bathe the cornea in a preservative free fluid all day, providing a "liquid bandage" between lens and front corneal surface

What can I expect during evaluation and follow up?

Your examination with take anywhere from 1-3 hours. During this time, our specialist will review medical records, use corneal mapping and additional scanning to assess health of eyes. Diagnostic Fitting will consist of placing trial Scleral Lenses on the eye to determine the most appropriate fit and best corrected vision.

After best fit is determined, patients will return for frequent follow up visits for lens pickup and evaluations. Scleral lenses require close and careful monitoring of the relationship between the lens and eye. All visits related to the Scleral Lenses and their fit are covered under the original evaluation fee for the first three months.
